Didn't the Cold War end long ago?
Though the war officially ended in 1991, it is still very much present in our modern society. The arms race in particular caused a huge increase in the production of atomic weapons. Now in 2010, President Obama met with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev over the new Strategic Arms Reduction treaty known as START. This treaty will reduce American and Russian nuclear weapons by about a third in attempt to control the insane amount of nuclear weapons created during the Cold War. Other things like the Space Race influenced today because of the rapid growth in space technology. It took us millions of years to get into space, but only a few decades once we were there to get as far as the moon. The Russians were the first to send a satellite into space, this caused a huge increase in education in America to compete with the Soviets. Today America still wants to hold its high standards of education and advancements in technology. It is because of the Cold War that today is such a technology driven era in history.

I have the part about the space race being a reason for all of our technology today in one of my posts too! Great minds think a like.
ReplyDeleteBut you are so right. Its like the cold war and all the tension between the US and Russia is all still there its just not as know to the people as it was back then. Interesting to think about...
I like how you said that both countries had created an insane amount of nuclear weapons. It is really crazy how this cometition got so out of hand.
ReplyDeleteI liked how you put the space race into perspective. I had never looked at it that way before. You did a great job at ahowing the tensions and adding extra background information. Good job!
ReplyDeleteI admire how you took two main topics in our notes about what was happening many years ago and applied them to today, the arms race and the space race. Also I never thought about how the Cold War helps us today with the level of technology. You are wonderful at bringing up topics not often thought of! :):)
ReplyDeleteI really like your effects that you put into perspective, especially technology. I also like that you included the specific example with Obama and Medvedev.
ReplyDeleteHey, the mention of the space race contributing to the tech we have today was great.
